Healthwatch campaigns to improve care for people with learning and sensory disabilities
People with a learning or sensory disability should be offered accessible information as standard when they use health and care services.
Our conversations with people locally have shown us that this doesn't always happen.
One Deaf person told us, ‘...at A&E I have problems as they don’t have interpreters. I know they can phone and I will have to wait two or three hours. A nurse will come and I will say, sorry I cannot. So then, I have to try and write for the doctor. It is hard to read, I cannot lipread very well. It makes it hard.’
Next month, we are launching a new report that calls for better access to services for people with learning disabilities and sensory impairments.
The Accessible Information Standard came into effect from 1 August 2016 and is a legal requirement. Click here to find out what five things health and care organisations need to do to make care accessible to people with learning and sensory disabilities.
