Enter and View visits to Eye Clinics explore how services are running

National Eye Health Week 2024 (NEHW) takes place from 23-29 September, promoting the importance of good eye health and the need for regular eye tests for all.

With the spotlight currently on eye care, staff and volunteers at Healthwatch Cambridgeshire and Peterborough recently conducted a series of Enter & View visits to eye clinics based at local hospitals.

The purpose of these visits is to take to patients and gain a greater understanding of their experiences of the services that the clinics provide, identify what is working well and what improvements could be made.

Following the visits, our team has drafted a report including recommendations which will be fed back to the Trusts that manage the eye clinics we attended. This report will be published in due course, and a copy made available on our website.

An estimated 50% of sight loss is avoidable. More than 2 million people in the UK are living with sight loss severe enough to have a significant impact on their daily lives, and 1 in 5 people will live with sight loss in their lifetime.

Sight tests can detect early signs of conditions like glaucoma, which can be treated if found soon enough, and other health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure may be detected.

That is why getting eye tests regularly is so important. But can people always get the eye care they need? We are supporting a survey being conducted by Healthwatch England to find out more about this issue. In particular, we are encouraging Black African/Caribbean and South Asian communities to complete the survey.
