Three new hospitals for Huntingdon, Cambridge and Kings Lynn
The announcement made on 25 May, means funding will be made available for a new hospital to be built on the existing site to meet the needs of the local population. Construction of a new main theatres building is already underway, and it is expected to receive its first patients by the end of 2023. New pathology and pharmacy departments are being developed and will be situated on the ground floor of the theatre block.
Two other hospitals, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kings Lynn and a new Cancer Research Hospital on the Addenbrookes Hospital site in Cambridge have been included in the second cohort of the New Hospital Programme. The new cancer hospital is expected to open in 2024. The re-building of the existing hospital in Kings Lynn is scheduled for completion in 2029.
Julian Stanley, CEO of Healthwatch Cambridgeshire and Peterborough said:
“All three of these major building projects will provide state of the art technology and new facilities, which is very welcome news indeed. It will enable medical, nursing and support staff at Hinchingbrooke, Addenbrookes and Kings Lynn to deliver high quality treatment, specialist services and care for many more patients across our region.”
